As worlds fall in battle, and mankind’s fleets are decimated, Selena is selected to lead a team of the Penal Regiment’s most battle-hardened veterans, in a last ditch attempt to destroy the aliens’ home world. If she fails mankind is doomed. Little does Selena know that one of her crew is a psychopathic killer and another is the husband of his victim.
Can she hold her team together, get them to their target and succeed in the attack? Selena knows that if she fails then there will be nothing at all left to go home to.

A Pride of Lions eBook Mark Iles

This is an interesting read but it is also tough to read at times. There are some brutal realities but this story will definitely grab your attention right from the first chapter. Selena is caught in part of a plot to kill the Queen and then she makes a decision that truly changes her life in a drastic way. She is sent off to the penal regiments where she is put through the most horrific kind of training, where not many survive and those who survive are then expected to become a protector of the galaxy. The characters, the scenes, the images give a very clear picture of the harsh realities of this place. It is a well written story that shows Selena that getting too attached to anything is not a good idea as most people and most things will be ripped from her life. It definitely pulls you into wanting to read book 2. 4.5/5

A Pride of Lions eBook Mark Iles Reviews

Selena Dillion receives a death sentence for being part of an assassination team on her home planet of Capulet. Given a choice of that or enlisting in the Penal Regiment, she takes living to dying. Her dedication and bravery surprises everyone, but beneath the tough woman rising through the ranks is a girl determined to go the home forbidden to her and take revenge for both her parents' murders by killing the vengeful queen.
Mark Iles paints a future of planetary exploration and colonization interrupted by an unknown enemy consuming entire planets, attempting to destroy mankind. The writing is crisp, forward moving from the first word. While the situations pass the boundaries of cruelty, they are a match somewhat to what any military person experiences once they join. The revelation of exactly who the galactic enemy is, my thoughts wandered to another science fiction author, and his carefully crafted worlds being attacked by "bugs."
Iles follows in Robert Heinlein's steps, presenting us with a story destined to become a great. I highly recommend this novel to all lovers of adventure and space travels.
This is one of the best books I've read this year. It is well written, providing a balance of character-building, suspense, and action packaged in 233 pages you'll breeze through.

Selena Dillon is an officer in the Penal Corps, the last chance for convicted criminals to escape the harsh sentence of prison or death. She commits herself to providing the best service she is capable of, hoping one day to finish the job she started back home.

The characters are brutally savage at times, but softened now and then by having real emotions and affection for each other. This story isn't just about the dangers of space or the politics of colonization, or even the dangers of alien species as human beings spread throughout the galaxy. There are so many vital interactions between the characters that there aren't many wasted words in this novel. Only on one occasion did I feel a reverse in the momentum mid-book, leading me to wonder briefly if the plot was heading in the direction I expected - but once the action re-intensified, I was not disappointed.

While this story stands alone well on its own, there is a fabulous lead-in to Book Two of the Darkening Stars series that I am looking forward to reading. I am greatly intrigued by the premise that human kind has been out to the stars before and fought the very same war. Those who forget history are bound to repeat it?

If you love dark sci-fi with a glance into some evil minds, you'll enjoy reading A Pride of Lions.
The Queen executes Selena Dillon’s mother. The small child witnesses the dastardly deed. Thereafter, Selena’s life goal is revenge. Years later, as a member of the resistance, she finally gets the chance, but the plot is foiled and she finds herself before the Judge. She proudly declares herself guilty. The jury agrees sentencing Selena and her crew to death. However, since the Federation is upgrading the military, the insurgents are offered the opportunity to serve in the Penal Regiments until they die in their ranks or are discharged after 25 years of service. The Penal Regiments is the most feared and respected branch of the military. One had to be either insane or desperate to join their ranks. If one joined this particular branch of the space corps, their previous lives would be erased. They lost their past, family, and even their personalities. Few ever survived. So when the Judge inquired, “Selena Dillon, your choice?” Selena said, “I choose the Penal Regiments.”

So begins Mark Iles’ Darkening Stars Book I A Pride of Lions. Selena determinedly endures the rigors of boot camp; that few survive. High command notices her leadership skills and she is placed in officer training school where she graduates at the head of her class. While all of this is happening, the Federation and all its human colonies are threatened by the Manta, an insect species bent on mankind’s destruction.

With a dramatic flair rivaling Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers, Iles has developed a braided plot centering around Selena Dillon’s career in the Penal Regiment as she faces situations that could result in the demise of every man, woman, and child in the universe. The Darkening Stars series is excellent fiction that a true sci-fi addict won’t want to miss.
